Manchester, Vermont | The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa

Looking out from the front of The Equinox

Facing Manchester, Vermont's historic village green, and with the Equinox Mountain acting as its dramatic backdrop, The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa has a long history as the area's most beautiful and luxurious resort.

Walking up to the beautiful Equinox

The history of the Equinox stretches back to 1769 when it started life as the Marsh Tavern. William Marsh, the tavern's owner, was a Loyalist to the British Crown during the Revolutionary War. Due to his allegiance to the Crown, his property was confiscated and he fled to Canada. The Marsh Tavern is now one of the resort's five dining venues, and is absolutely delicious!

The original tavern was purchased in 1780 by Thaddeus Munson and an inn was added to the property. With the inn changing hands several times, it was in 1839 that the now iconic fluted columns were added to the front of the beautiful resort, spanning 285 feet. By 1859 the 200 room luxury resort was known as The Equinox House.

The Equinox has hosted several U.S. presidents, and in 1864, Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln, along with their two sons, Robert Todd and Thomas, spent a summer at the resort. The Lincolns were so taken with their stay at the Equinox and with with town of Manchester, that Robert Todd Lincoln eventually built a summer home nearby, known as Hildene.

With the resort's luxurious interiors and guest rooms that boast unbelievable views of the mountains and Manchester's village green, it comes as no surprise that the Lincolns choose The Equinox.

Inside the Equinox

The Equinox provides access to many unique summer and winter activities in the Manchester area, which you can book online at their website, or have the concierge help reserve for you. Luckily, along with my best friend, I got to experience a couple of the resort's offerings, starting with a horseback ride through some of Vermont's most beautiful backcountry. I can't begin to describe how beautiful our ride was. Weaving through winding trails, in wooded land and pastures, we were greeted with some of the most stunning mountain vistas I've ever seen. It is an experience I'll never forget!

Such a gorgeous view during our horseback ride!

After a late morning on the trails, we headed to the Green Mountain Falconry School, where the Equinox had booked a lesson. Falconry is never something I'd put much thought to before, but it was absolutely fascinating! Master falconer, Rob White, introduced us the ancient art of falconry by first providing us with basic knowledge of the equipment and birds. Rob has a talent for sparking your interest with his informational, yet casual and friendly, explanations. We really enjoyed our time with him and the beautiful hawks!

Rob White shows off one of the school's beautiful birds.

Under Rob's instruction, we quickly learned the basics of handling the birds and even took a walk through the autumn woods, as our bird kept an eye on us and followed along. I hadn't even known it was possible to train them to do such a thing, and I was fascinated by whole experience.

After a day of fun, engaging activity, it was time for a massage at The Spa at Equinox.

With an indoor, heated pool and a fitness club that provides state-of-the-art equipment, the Spa also offers a robust list of luxurious spa services. I highly recommend the massage! It's the best I've ever had.

Plenty of seating for lounging outside the spa

Though the Equinox resort offers just about everything you could possibly want for a getaway, it doesn't hurt that it also happens to be located in breathtaking Manchester, Vermont. Manchester is over-flowing with beauty, from its mountains, country roads, carefully preserved New England architecture, and iconic village green. With some great outlet shopping, Orvis's flagship store, and a bounty of restaurants, Manchester is a vacation locale where you never run out of things to do.
